Colonial Antique Furniture
In America, this period style dominated design from the earliest
settlements to the Revolution of 1776. Here (as elsewhere) it represents
styles that are generically from 'mother' countries but suitably adapted to make use of the materials
and fit for uses of the colonies, primarily Africa, India, the Americas, and
the Caribbean.
In furniture, it was a
style that dominated the designs of American furniture from the 1700's
up to the Revolutionary era. It depended on the heavy use of wood which
was a raw material of the colonies, and was often left unfinished (untreated). Spindle forms were used for
chair legs and backs in lieu of fancy ornamentation. One of the most common beliefs is that the majority of American Colonial furniture was inspired by English furniture which was in turn inspired by furniture from the Italian Renaissance.
Nevertheless, whatever the inspiration, colonial antique furniture is still a very popular furniture and you can find a list of the current auctions below.
