Sheraton Antique Furniture (1751-1806)Thomas Sheraton (1750-1806), was an English cabinetmaker whose name has been given to a school of design in English furniture. Using mahogany as his dominant wood, he followed the classic, simple design in the wake of Adam and Hepplewhite. It was charecterised by straight lines and smooth proportions to give it a more elegant, clean-cut feel.
Arguably more popular in America than in Europe, the Sheraton style was remarkable for its refined elegance, excellent proportions and balanced distribution of ornaments. It mirrored the influence of Robert Adam and the Louis XVI style, both styles of which Sheraton was a keen admirer of.
Quite difficult to come across compared to some of the other more popular forms of antique furniture but that just makes a Sheraton all the more special when you do actually come across one.
