Gothic Antique Furniture

Primarily an architectural/design style that prevailed in western Europe from the twelfth through the fifteenth centuries, characterized by pointed arches, ribbed vaults, and flying buttresses that made it possible to create stone buildings that reached great heights.

Furniture from this period had a great emphasis on presence and height. An underlying need to impose on everything else in the room, including the people! It was essentially of simple and crude construction and was solid and massive and severe in character.

Now, in the 21st Century, you will find many things, especially furniture, described as 'gothic' but the reality of the meaning has been somewhat lost over the centuries. Real gothic furniture is hard to come by but you may be able to find a genuine piece in amongst the replicas and mis-described items below.
